CARMUS Museum

The Carmus Museum combines art, history, and curiosities in a unique space in Alba de Tormes.

In the same convent house founded by Teresa of Jesus, there is a museum covering 900 square meters of exhibition space and including some of the convent’s original rooms, now restored.

The collection is centered around the chapels, rooms designed to house the saint’s relics, and concludes with a visit to her tomb.

The various rooms house important Renaissance and Baroque works of art—all with religious themes—including paintings, sculptures, goldsmithing, and furniture, including canvases, carvings, altarpieces, reliquaries, and ivories of magnificent quality. The number and quality of the artworks in this museum is impressive, but if a single work were to be highlighted, it would be the famous Our Lady of Sorrows carved by Pedro de Mena around 1675.

The collection of figures of the Child Jesus in various costumes from the 17th and 18th centuries is also striking. Equally essential is the rich collection of paintings on copper plates or precious stones that this museum houses.
