Castle of the Dukes of Alba

The imposing figure of the Keep, or Armory Tower, is a substantial part of the skyline of Alba de Tormes. It is also a key element of the urban route, allowing for a fascinating tour of the historic complex.

Its origin is uncertain. Initially, it is believed to have been built as a mere watchtower and defense tower. Later, in the 15th century, its true transformation began under the leadership of Don García Álvarez de Toledo, the First Duke of Alba and origin of this lineage.

Under the Grand Duke of Alba, Don Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, the castle became a palatial fortress that housed an illustrious Renaissance court. It had six towers decorated with marble and mural paintings such as those preserved in the Keep, frescoes depicting scenes from the Battle of Mühlberg, painted by Cristóbal Passín and Miguel Ruíz de Carvajal.

After its splendor, the castle suffered the ravages of time, battles, and conflicts, primarily during the Peninsular War, which considerably reduced its size.

Today, after various renovations, you can visit the main tower, which houses the aforementioned paintings, the Interpretation Room, and ascend to the panoramic viewpoint outside, which offers a magnificent view of the surroundings. Outside, you can stroll through the ruins resulting from the archaeological excavations begun in 1991, which have uncovered the castle’s former splendor, declared a Site of Cultural Interest.
